I'm about to renew my account for the station, and it's pretty daunting. With Live365 having to recover the new, higher royalty rates, the annual cost of the station is now $700+, and that doesn't count the music I've been purchasing. That's a pretty big hit for a working musician.

You can help me by getting a VIP account. Not only do you get better sound quality, but you can get rid of the annoying commercials, and I get a small credit toward my account for each VIP hour. If I can't get the VIP listening hours up over the next year, then I'll have to shut the station down.

Today I added the Jack Kittel's version of Leon Payne's notorious Psycho to the station. Payne is the legendary songwriter who wrote Lost Highway and They'll Never Take Her Love From Me, among other country standards. Psycho is generally thought to be the most disturbing song in the history of country music.

Curious about how I'm picking the music for the station? My Country Roots web site is my selection of what I consider the most essential country CDs, and some commentary about each. It has been newly revised and expanded. The playlists for the station draw very heavily on these CDs, although there's a lot more besides.

The Cal Smith cut is the original version of a song that was a hit for George Strait. I've been looking for a Brad Paisley song because the guy is a smoking guitar player. When I rented Cars to watch with my daughter and I heard Behind the Clouds, I knew it was the one. Very retro, cool steel playing, great song.

Sometime this week, I'll be launching a web page for the station and changing the name to Honky Tonk Heaven. Also, I've doubled the storage capacity on my account, so now there are 36 continuous hours of music, which means I'll be able to do updates less frequently but still keep the rotation fresh.

Texas singer/yodeler Don Walser passed away yesterday at age 72 due to complications from diabetes. He was an incredible singer and he was the coolest. You can read about him in the Austin American Statesman obituary. I added a bunch of tracks, including an amazing version of Slim Whitman's Rose Marie backed by the Kronos Quartet. RIP, Don.

To answer some questions I've had recently: The current playlist is about 18 hours long and is updated daily when I'm in town. It's very heavy on classic country, but with the high average listening time, I've felt the need to expand it somewhat to keep it fresh. Hence the recent introduction of slightly more bluegrass, rockabilly and country rock, a small amount of the current good stuff from Nashville (I had to dig deep!), some indie country bands and even a little bit of clearly country-influenced roots rock. TLH numbers keep going up, so I'm assuming most everyone likes having some of that material in the playlist along with all the Hank, Buck, Merle, Porter, etc. I own all this music and I've made substantial purchases in the last few months to keep new material coming in
